5 Simple Ways How To Discipline Defiant Toddlers

If you thought you would not have to worry about having a defiant child until the teenage years, you are in for a huge surprise. Toddlers are notorious for challenging parents. These little people are trying to figure life out, and sometimes it can be hard. We wanted to provide you with five ways on how to discipline defiant toddlers in a ways that work.

1. Be Consistent-A defiant toddler is going to do everything in his power to get him/her under your skin and get his/her way. If you have a defiant toddler, you have to hold firm. Be consistent in what you say and do. For instance, if you have a child that continually does something you have told him/her not to do, then you need to provide the appropriate disciplines, time after time until the child understands that youare serious. The most common mistake parents make is giving in because the child has worn them down. Instead, be strong and persistent-reminding yourself that you are the parent!

2. Punishment-Another tip on how to discipline defiant toddlers is to set the punishment to the crime. Keeping in mind that toddlers are going to be little stinkers occasionally, choose an appropriate punishment. Obviously, the punishment should get his/her attention but not too harsh. You can explain to your toddler that if he/she acts out again, this is what will happen. Even at a young age, communication is important and after having to pay for the bad behaviors a few times, the child will understand.

3. Positive Reinforcement-Never be afraid to provide your toddler with praise andrewards for doing things right. Often, positive reinforcement can be highly effective. That does not mean punishment will go away but that you want to let the child know you recognize good behavior.

4. Time Out-This method on how to discipline defiant toddlers has been around for a long time and continues to be a good and effective choice. Choose a chair mat or in a set place where your child will be required to go when acting badly. The key to success with time outs is to set the child down for no more than five minutes. Unfortunately, their little minds cannot comprehend time know anything more will only have opposite results.

5. Elimination-Children hate having favorite toys taken away but when it comes to how to discipline defiant toddlers, taking a toy or game awayfor a few days can do wonders. Simply explain to the toddler that when the behavior improves, the toy/game will be given back in a few days. Then, stick with your decision.
